STANDARD (OSLO) is proud to announce the opening of American artist Tauba
Auerbach's second solo exhibition with the gallery. Entitled "The W Axis", Auerbach's exhibition would build on an intersection between scientific research and a basic art-historical yet pivotal visual-cultural device: what are the conditions for three-dimensional objects in two-dimensional renderings?

Since introducing their "Untitled (Fold)" series in 2009, Tauba Auerbach has subjected this group of paintings to a slight shift of motivation. Initially they would be characterized by an interest in how to merge two conflicting, discrete states. Proposing a merging of contrary as an alternative to being contrary, the series was exploring means to avoid the conformity of resistance being merely oppositional. With the evolvement of the series the motivation is recently spurred by the notion that if one can remove or soften the barrier between a two-dimensional and three-dimensional state then this also implies an ability to dissolve the barrier between three-dimensional and three+n dimensional states.
The title, "The W Axis", suggests such a possibility. Whereas 'X', 'Y', 'Z' are the three spacial dimensions that we are familiar with, 'W' would be a way of articulating a possible fourth. As modern physics holds other spacial dimensions as truths simply inaccessible through unmediated human senses - in fact leaving 'op art' relevant as a means of engaging pure perception - one could claim that this analytical approach becomes a phenomenological approach in that it is aiming itself toward transcendence of some sort. What might be described as a cerebral process or a system that may be set up from within certain constraints, simultaneously would manage to map out or suggest the potential of transcending those constraints. It's paradox that becomes an agreement and moves one "beyond".
Tauba Auerbach (b. 1981) lives and works in San Francisco and New York. They graduated from Stanford University, California, and has since had numerous solo exhibitions including "Here and Now/And Nowhere" at Deitch Projects, New York, "Passengers" at CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Art, San Francisco, and "The Answer/Wasn't Here", Jack Hanley Gallery, San Francisco. Recent group exhibitions include "Greater New York", PS1 MoMA, New York; "2010 - The Whitney Biennial", Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; "Skin Fruit" and "Younger Than Jesus", New Museum, New York.
Parallel to the exhibition STANDARD (OSLO) will host a solo presentation of Auerbach's works at FIAC in Paris, and in November 2011 Bergen Kunsthall will be the first venue for a touring solo exhibition.
