KIM HIORTHØY: "Hole in the Wall"
-----
Kunstnernes Hus has the pleasure of presenting Kim Hiorthøy's solo exhibition Hole in the Wall. Hiorthøy has an interdisciplinary approach to artistic work and is active as an artist, choreographer, musician, graphic designer, author and filmmaker.
"I have several times tried to think of an apartment in which there would be a useless room, absolutely and intentionally useless. It wouldn’t be a junk room, it wouldn’t be an extra bedroom, or a corridor, or a cubby-hole, or a corner. It would be a functionless space. It would serve for nothing, relate to nothing."
— George Perec, The Apartment
"Why doesn’t Sancho also fight the giant?", asks the boy.
"Because Sancho knows the giant is really a windmill, and you can't fight against a windmill. A windmill is not a living thing."
"He's not a windmill, he's a giant! He’s only a windmill in the picture."
— J. M. Coetzee, The Childhood of Jesus
"All the reading they had done in the hopes of transporting themselves, a transporting that finally happened with death, which delivered them the transporting they had hoped for by reading, while fearing it in the form of death — all while longing for it in reading!"
— Sheila Heti, Pure Color
Hole in the Wall is an exhibition of drawings and sculptures – and something between the two – which the viewer can search their way through. The sculptures and drawings shift between figuration and abstraction and something which is commonplace and uncategorizable at the same time.
The exhibition’s hole in the wall is both a mystery and a fact. A hole is an entrance and a transition –a place to escape into or out of. At Kunstnernes Hus, the observant visitor will find holes both in the different structures and in the architecture itself.
The exhibition is followed by a publication that contains a conversation between Kim Hiorthøy and filmmaker and author Dag Johan Haugerud.
