“ROOM WITH A VIEW”
17.08.-29.09.2013 / KRISTIANSAND KUNSTHALL, KRISTIANSAND
-----
In 2013, 100 years of universal suffrage are celebrated in Norway. Women's equal status as citizens is marked as a historical milestone while also looking ahead. To mark the occasion, Kristiansand Kunsthall will show an exhibition that deals with physical space as a metaphor for space for action.
The exhibition "A Room with a View" combines two larger units of work that take possession of the room in their own way. Two artists who work with everyday life or with unconventional materials – in a tradition developed by, among other things, avant-garde movements – have been given the freedom to take a place in the art gallery. Everyday repetition and different textile expressions get a lot of space. Two personal voices emerge instead of being part of an overall pattern. The interpretation of the whole develops along the way in dialogue between artists, curators, writers and the public. The title "A Room with a View" refers to EM Forster's novel of the same name from 1908, but also to Virginia Woolf's thesis about a separate room and to the art gallery's position in the city. The exhibition also examines curatorial strategies that allow room for artistic freedom and unexpected results.
