Horizons and silhouettes, the meeting point between earth and sky, are here both supporting motifs and pretexts for the painting. Juxtaposed with a series of solar motifs, we find schematic, horizontal landscape blocks and stripes, so-called stamp works, which have given the exhibition its title. For two decades, the stamp, as an emblem for the landscape and the world, has been a central figure in Slaattelid's artistry. The horizon line is frozen, twisted and turned in a game with subject and ground, depth and surface, illusion and fracture. Slaattelid consistently and analytically explores the landscape genre through a rich, painterly vocabulary. The oppositions are challenged between the conceptual and the expressive, the photographic and the painterly, the generic and the distinctive.
Slaattelid was a festival exhibitor in Bergen in 2019, and the presentation at Kunstnernes Hus is a collaboration with Bergen Kunsthall. The two institutions have co-produced the book Templates , published in May 2019 by the German publisher Sternberg Press.
